How I 5x'd Conversion Rate Using AI (And Some Real Work)

Discover how I transformed Music Made Pro's conversion rate from 0.08% to 0.45% by rebuilding our ordering system with AI-assisted development.

The Problem: Generic Shopify Templates Don't Cut It

When I first launched Music Made Pro, our conversion rate was ABYSMAL. We're talking 0.08% - for every thousand visitors, less than one person bought. The culprit? A generic out-of-the-box Shopify template that wasn't built for our specific service.

If you're not familiar with Music Made Pro, we offer personalized songs through lyric swapping. We take existing songs and modify the lyrics while preserving the original artist's voice (using AI). But our original ordering system was painfully simple: upload a PDF with your desired lyrics and hope for the best.

This created a mess on both ends. Customers had no guidance on syllable matching or rhyming patterns, leading to impossible requests. Our producers spent hours dealing with revisions and explaining why certain lyrics wouldn't work. Everyone was frustrated. 😫

Thinking Bigger: Kill Multiple Birds With One Stone

I could have taken the typical route - A/B test button colors, tweak copy, add more product photos. But my gut told me we needed something more radical. The real problem wasn't just poor conversion - it was a disconnect between what customers expected and what we could deliver.

So I asked: What if we could simultaneously improve conversion AND reduce backend headaches? What if the ordering process itself could educate customers on what works?

This is my first principle of effective optimization: Don't just fix symptoms. When you update something, try to solve multiple problems at once. This is especially possible for smaller businesses where you can see the whole picture. Even at larger companies, proper discovery research before committing to development will save you endless pain.

The AI Approach: Vibe Coding vs A/B Testing

Let me bust a myth: AI won't magically fix your conversion rates. Anyone selling you a fully autonomous AI conversion optimization tool is full of shit. The biggest wins come from fundamental changes that generic AI testing tools can't conceptualize.

But AI CAN help you build those fundamental changes faster and cheaper than traditional development. I used what's now called "vibe coding" - using AI to write code that you don't fully understand, but that gets the job done. At the time I built this, there wasn't even a term for it yet.

I mostly used Claude to write a custom Next.js application that would be embedded in my existing Shopify site. Today, I'd recommend using Claude with the Sonnet model through an extension like Cline for VS Code, which lets the AI directly edit your code files. If you use Claude directly, definitely use Project Folders (to give it consistent context) and MCP Servers, which can reduce obvious errors.

The process isn't without a learning curve. You still need to learn how to prompt effectively, break problems into components, and spot obvious issues. But it's DRAMATICALLY easier than learning to code from scratch. And I built something that would have cost around $5,000 to outsource.

The Solution: A Custom Lyric-Changing Tool

Custom lyric-changing tool interface showing original and modified lyrics

Instead of asking customers to figure everything out themselves, I built a tool that:

  • Lets users import original lyrics from sources like Genius.com
  • Allows them to edit lyrics right in the browser with immediate feedback
  • Automatically checks syllable counts and highlights potential issues
  • Adjusts pricing in real-time based on how many words are changed
  • Offers optional AI assistance to rewrite sections

This solves problems for EVERYONE. Customers get immediate feedback on whether their changes will work. Our production team receives structured orders with properly formatted lyrics. And I get more consistent work estimates based on word count, which correlates strongly with production effort.

You can see the current version of the tool here: https://lyricchange.vercel.app/

The Results: From 0.08% to 0.45% Conversion

The impact was immediate and SUBSTANTIAL. Our conversion rate jumped from 0.08% to 0.45% - more than a 5x improvement. And this in an industry where people expect everything to be free (AI music is a tough market).

Just as importantly, customer satisfaction improved because they better understood what they were ordering. Production time decreased since we received better-formatted requests. And we could more accurately price based on work required.

Did I need a formal A/B test to know it worked? Hell no. When your orders suddenly quintuple, you don't need a statistical analysis to confirm you're on the right track. This is especially true for early-stage businesses - sometimes you need big swings, not incremental improvements.

Key Lessons: Better Discovery, Better Results

The biggest takeaway isn't about the technology - it's about the approach. DISCOVERY is everything. Understanding the complete picture of your business challenges lets you design solutions that solve multiple problems at once.

AI is a powerful assistant, not a replacement for strategic thinking. No AI tool would have suggested the specific requirements that came from my internal knowledge as the solution to my conversion problem. That insight came from deeply understanding both my customers and my operations.

And remember - launch is just the beginning. Initial deployment revealed new issues, like AI content moderation blocking certain lyrics. I had to pivot from making AI the primary feature to a secondary assistant. Continuous improvement based on real user feedback is critical.

Your Turn: Implementing These Principles

Whether or not you use AI tools to build your solution, you can apply these core principles to your own business:

  • Think holistically - How can one change solve multiple problems?
  • Focus on discovery - Understand the underlying issues before designing solutions
  • Take big swings - Don't limit yourself to incremental A/B tests when you need fundamental change
  • Measure what matters - Watch your key metrics (conversions, revenue) rather than getting lost in process statistics
  • Plan for iteration - Launch is just version 1.0; be prepared to refine based on real usage

Not every business needs a custom web application. But every business needs to deeply understand their customer journey and pain points to optimize effectively.
